Badminton racquet and squash racquet side by side showing key differences in weight, head size, strings and shaft design

Badminton vs Squash Racquet: What’s the Difference and Can You Use the Same One?

If you've played squash and you're thinking about trying badminton — or vice versa — you might be wondering whether you can use the same racquet for both. The short answer is no. While both sports use racquets and a net, they are engineered for completely different physical demands.

The Core Difference: What They're Hitting

A badminton shuttlecock weighs just 4.8–5.1 grams and is struck through open air. It requires a light, fast racquet. A squash ball weighs 23–25 grams and is struck against a wall, requiring a racquet that can handle repeated physical impact.

Weight

Badminton racquets typically weigh 80–95g. Squash racquets are typically 110–150g. Using a badminton racquet for squash risks snapping the shaft. Using a squash racquet for badminton makes generating adequate swing speed extremely difficult.

Head Size and Shape

Badminton racquet heads are larger and flatter — typically 73–75cm² of string bed. Squash heads are smaller and oval-shaped. Yonex's isometric head shape maximises the sweet spot for badminton play.

Strings and Tension

Badminton strings are very thin (0.65–0.70mm) and strung at high tension (20–30+ lbs). Squash strings are thicker (1.15–1.35mm) and strung lower. Badminton strings are not designed to absorb the repeated impact of a rubber ball and would likely break immediately.

Shaft Flex and Length

Badminton shafts flex during the swing to store and release energy. Squash shafts are stiffer for directional precision. Each is engineered specifically for its sport.

Which Should You Buy?

For badminton: start with an authentic Yonex racquet. Our Beginner Racquets are a good starting point. The Yonex GR 303i Set of 2 is popular for players starting with a partner. The Yonex Nanoray Light 18i suits solo beginners. The Astrox Attack 9 suits beginners with an attacking, power-focused style. As you improve, the Yonex Astrox Lite 27i is a popular intermediate upgrade, and for intermediate speed players the Nanoflare Speed 7 or Nanoflare 800 Play are worth exploring.
